Spotify revolutionizes reading: Synchronize your paper books with audiobooks!

After learning that Spotify has increased its prices once again, although this time not in our country, the company is developing an innovative feature that will allow audiobook users continue your reading right at the point where you left off in the physical book.

As discovered by Android Authority in version 9.1.18.282 of the Spotify application, some references to a bookmark function (Page Match) that would facilitate the quick synchronization of audiobooks on the platform with their paper or ebook versions.

To use Page Match, users will need unlock or purchase the audiobook on Spotifyand also own the printed or digital version of the same book.

This new Spotify feature uses phone camera to scan current book pageusing optical text recognition to identify passages that correlate to specific timestamps in the audiobook.

This means that if you are reading at home and need to go out by car, you can scan the page with Spotify and, by launching the application while driving, should continue playing from the next segment.

An interesting feature of this feature, according to information found in the code, is that Spotify would display the page number that corresponds to the current position in the audiobookthus facilitating the exchange between the audiobook format and the physical book.

In this way, when we return home and resume physical reading, simply by looking at Spotify we would know exactly on which page should we continue.

In fact, Spotify describes this feature as capable of “synchronizing your book page progress with the audiobook, and vice versa.”

The biggest drawback might be that, depending on the edition of the book, the page number may vary, although this is a minor problem compared to the unique benefits of this Spotify feature, which is somewhat reminiscent of Amazon’s Whispersync for Voice.

Whispersync for Voice allows you to sync Audible audiobooks with Kindle ebooks, but does not offer support for syncing with physical books or ebooks from other platforms.

This feature is particularly attractive for avid readers who want to alternate between reading and listening to the audiobook while doing other activities, although not so much for those who prefer physical contact with the book to immerse themselves in their reading.

Spotify has yet to officially announce Page Match and it is not clear if it will be available in Spain or in other regions, so we must wait for its official launch.
