Iran talks about progress in negotiations with the US but rules out an imminent agreement and closes the Strait of Hormuz

Iran claims to have given some first, although very modest, steps in the second round of indirect talks with the United States that were held this Tuesday in Geneva. Specifically, it was the Iranian Foreign Minister, Abbas Araqchiwho announced that both countries, feuding for decades, have reached “an understanding on the main guiding principles” related to Tehran’s nuclear program.

However, the head of Iranian diplomacy has clarified to his country’s media after the end of the meeting that “progress does not mean that an agreement will be reached soon,” reports the Reuters agency. “The path has only begun,” he noted, after detailing that, above all, the lifting of sanctions has been discussed.

During the brief meeting, which lasted nearly three hours, Washington and Tehran have exchanged messages through the Sultanate of Oman, which acts as mediator. The meeting was at a high level, with Araqchi leading the Iranian delegation, and the White House special envoy, Steve Witkoff, and Jared Kushner, son-in-law of President Donald Trump, leading the American one.

At the same time that negotiations were taking place in the Swiss capital, Tehran has announced the temporary closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a maritime passage for Persian Gulf oil, to carry out military maneuvers with live fire in an unusual show of force.
